London is so huge that it would take many months to discover everything it offers, that too, very superficially. Often, only the very famous places of London are recognized to be a valuable visit, thus being for example the Big Ben TOWER (Big Ben only refers to the bell) or afternoon tea with the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Maybe the London Zoo, too. But let us not forget what else there is to see.
A walk on the south bank of the river Thames gives the visitor a nice view of the skyline (which literally changes every year) : the "Gherkin", the Canary Wharf, the Shard. Of course you will get the chance to see Tower Bridge, London Bridge and many more. One will pass the London Eye at Embankment, a really fascinating attraction from which you can see the whole of London from above.
A riverboat ride is always a nice experience, even during times of London's famous wet weather. Most boats go to the west, as far as Hampton Court Palace, which has the one of most beautiful Gardens of the town. But nothing can beat Kew Gardens, not far from there, including walks high up in trees, humid green houses, little bodies of waters and is now populated by many green parrots, too.
But these attractions cost a lot. London is not a very cheap place to live in or to visit. Furthermore, travelling around is very expensive. Nevertheless, most of the museums in town are free of charge and very interesting. I was particularly fascinated by the "Science Museum" located in South Kensington along with the Natural History Museum.
And don't forget the various parks, like Hyde Park. Here you should keep your ears open for various speeches for or against anything (excepting against the Queen) at Speaker's Corner.
I have only mentioned very few places to visit and it already sounds so huge. That is normal for a capital. But London hasn't been a proper city for as long as many others.
That is because traditionally every city had to have a cathedral. And the only cathedral in London is St. Paul's, which was built in 1708. Before this, London was considered merely a town, like maybe some little village in the mountains.
All in all one can say that London has a lot to offer and that it doesn't rain as often as people think (beware of such clichés) . Nonetheless, one should always be prepared for a shower, so keep an umbrella handy!
